WHEAT AND CHAFF
WHEAT AND CHAFF is a collaborative project (Bess Kristoffersen, Pernille Mouritzen and Katrine Borup) made for The Biennale for Craft and Design 2019. We share, co-create and include nature as a partner with everything from plants, animals and soil to wind, sun, rain, salt and more.
Part of the responsibility for and control over the process is handed over to something outside ourselves in a respectful gesture that challenges a view that considers humankind the master of nature.
With a concept borrowed from the American theorist of science Donna Haraway we strive for sympoiesis (making with or co-creating) in contrast to autopoiesis (self-making). Tentacles reaching out to the environment, open exploration and organic spontaneity are key terms.
The free space for experimentation that we as makers are so dependent on is under pressure, but we claim the right to embrace both the wheat and the chaff.
